Early this afternoon, I stood on the roof of my tower with dozens of other people and watched the last flight of Concorde. The plane circled the horizon, and then made a low level pass directly over us. I’d never seen a flying Concorde so close, and it was beautiful and awesome. I can only imagine what a supersonic pass must be like.
Then, as the crowds dispersed, I was one of the few left on the roof to watch the aircraft make its final landing, a shining white sliver on the horizon gracefully disappearing behind the trees. I know all the economic arguments, but as the rain started to fall and I began to walk back to the office, I couldn’t help but reflect on the loss of this little piece of a future that never was, but might yet be.
